STD Testing: What to Expect

Though millions of people currently have an STD –– and millions more are at-risk for contracting an STD –– many individuals have never had an STD test before. This is understandable to some degree. STD testing can seem scary, invasive, or even shameful. Yet, the reality is quite different. STD testing is safe, confidential, and it’s a responsible thing to do. If you’re concerned about your health, but nervous about STD tests, then this blog is for you. Here’s what to expect from STD testing:

What are STD Tests Like?

STD tests are simple, painless and take only a few minutes to complete. The majority of STD tests involve either producing a urine sample or a blood sample. For reference, chlamydia and gonorrhea require a urine sample, while herpes, HIV, and syphilis require a blood sample. In some instances, a medical professional may collect a tissue sample from a sore or bump produced by an STD. And in order to test for oral or rectal STDs, doctors will use a swab to collect a specimen.

It’s worth mentioning here that the male STD testing procedure isn’t nearly as bad is it’s made out to be. Thanks to innovations in testing technology, STD tests no longer involve inserting a swab into the urethra. (Note, other medical facilities that lack Same Day’s advanced technology may still use penile swabs.)

How to Schedule an Appointment

If you need to have an STD test, odds are you want it done quickly. The bad news here is that it can take a long time to schedule an appointment with your regular doctor. In fact, you could have to wait over three weeks to see a doctor.

What’s more, free clinics like Planned Parenthood often have long lines and they may be short-staffed. So you could have to wait around in a public place to get tested.

What Do I Need for STD Testing?

Different STD testing facilities require different levels of documentation. For instance, to get tested at a doctor’s office or free clinic, individuals will need forms of identification and/or proof of insurance. Furthermore, an STD test done at a doctor’s office will remain on a patient’s permanent medical record, which will be available to insurance providers.

There is no need to fast or make any special preparations for STD testing. Just show up!
