Penis Discoloration: Causes and Treatment Options

It should go without saying, but the penis is a sensitive organ. Unsurprisingly, most men will feel concern if they notice any sort of abnormality that forms on or around their genitals. This includes bumps, rashes, burning sensations, and –– today’s topic –– penis discoloration. Penis discoloration can occur for a wide range of reasons; it may denote a benign skin condition or the presence of a potentially life-threatening disease. Here, we’ll explain what causes penis discoloration, and what you can do to protect your health and well-being:

Arousal

During arousal, the penis will fill with blood and change color. This is completely normal. If, though, you experience pain during arousal or intercourse, you should get tested for STDs ASAP.

Bruises

Like any other part of your body, it’s possible to bruise your penis. Rough sex, vigorous masturbation, or external forces can all cause bruising to form on the penis. Normally, penile bruises will heal on their own. However, certain deep tissue bruises like hematoma (where blood escapes blood vessels) can occur after surgery or severe trauma. A hematoma may cause loss of blood flow, and, as such, men with a penile hematoma should seek immediate medical attention.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a white discoloration that can form on any part of the body. Most commonly, vitiligo happens on the elbows or knees, but it can develop on the penis as well. Vitiligo forms when skin cells stop producing melanin. It is not painful, dangerous, or contagious.

Melanosis

On the other end of the spectrum, some men experience small dark spots appearing on their penis. This may be the result of melanosis –– or a condition when skin cells produce excess melanin. Again, it isn’t painful, dangerous, or contagious.

Allergic Reactions

Certain soaps, lotions, lubricants, and latex condoms can cause allergic reactions. While allergic reactions on the penis can be extremely uncomfortable, they’re not typically dangerous. If a reaction persists, or if the skin is broken, however, you should seek out medical attention immediately.

STDs

Several STDs can cause bumps, sores, or lesions to form on the penis including herpes, syphilis, and HIV. Syphilis in particular will cause the formation of an open sore (chancre) on or around the penis. In addition, syphilis is also typified by brownish rashes that can develop on the hands, feet, or genital region (penis.) The frightening thing about STDs is that they’re often asymptomatic. What’s more, symptoms may also disappear after a time, but that doesn’t mean the infection has left your system. Indeed, untreated STDs like syphilis can lead to a host of medical issues including paralysis, blindness, and death.

Penile Cancer

While penile cancer is very rare, it is nevertheless a serious condition. Signs of penile cancer include growths or sores on the penis, discolorations, penile redness, rashes, bumps, or lumps on the genital region. If you notice any of the above symptoms, see a doctor right away.
