Wyoming Reports Jump in Chlamydia Rates

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention says that the number of chlamydia infections in Wyoming since 2007 has increased sharply.

Right now Wyoming has the 26th-highest rate of chlamydia infection in the United States.  In 2007 Wyoming ranked 44th overall.  With 588 reported cases, Laramie County ranks with the highest totals in the state.

Two reasons given for the increase include improved testing and STD testing vouchers given made available by Wyoming during the summer of 2010.

Chlamydia is by far one of the most common of the sexually transmitted diseases.  It is caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis.  Approximately a quarter of men with chlamydia have no symptoms.  The damage that chlamydia causes can be “silent” meaning there are little to no signs or symptoms.
