Free STD Testing: What You Need to Know

Everyone loves a good deal. Whether you aim to save a few bucks by switching cell-phone carriers, or by collecting coupons for your next trip to the store, the point is people are always looking for ways to save. Indeed, the desire to get something for nothing extends as far as the realm of STD testing. And while there are options for free  STD testing available, there are some crucial things everyone should know before they undergo a free STD test.

Test Quality

Thinking you might have an STD is an uncomfortable feeling (mentally and physically.) As such, it’s no surprise that when someone takes an STD test, they want a definitive answer to the burning question: do I have an STD or not? However, if you visit certain free clinics and testing sites, you won’t be able to say for sure. That’s because while STD testing equipment has advanced in the past few years, not every clinic offers the most up-to-date testing methods. So instead of walking away from the experience with a clear, definitive answer, you may end up facing more questions instead.

Speed and Efficiency

There are some things in life worth waiting for; STD test results aren’t, though. If you find yourself unsure of your sexual well-being, the absolute last thing you want to do is wait to find out if you have an STD. Unfortunately, not only will you have to stand in long lines at a free clinic, you’ll also probably have to wait on your test results. It may even be weeks before you find out for sure, and then it can prove difficult to distinguish one STD from another. No one should have to wait that long to determine their sexual wellness.

Privacy –– and Lack Thereof

Let’s face it: going to free clinics like Planned Parenthood aren’t enjoyable days out. So unless you want to deal with long lines, older generation testing methods, and a real lack of privacy, you should consider other options. Plus, nothing is quite as awkward or as cringe-inducing as requesting an STD test in front of a crowd of strangers. Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that free STD testing options come with a number of “catches.” After all, you get what you pay for.
